Peyton Rose in Chicago for BookExpo America at McCormick Place. This is, by far, the largest book event in America. All the big houses on the floor with their new releases. A veritable shmorgasborg of readings. A nerd’s Wakarusa. I watched people fight over books tossed on the floor. Looting nerds. Scary and comical and wonderfully weird. Women emerging from mobs with a tumbling mass of books. Literary scouts walking around with phones glued to their faces. Publishers. Printers. Manufacturers. Designers. Mean librarians. Some nice ones. Book promoters. Authors. Poets. Famous people who can’t write, but have a best-selling book. I hooked up with a group for my next project. Met people who talked writing. Talked writing. Made notes. Made a friend. Made contacts. 2017 is just around the corner. I have big plans for this year. Well, I try to have no plans. Just intentions. You know the drill. Let it go. Write. Read. Discuss. Accept. Create. Listen. Adapt. Overcome. And most of all, enjoy yourself a little bit. BookExpo America is an event that every existing and aspiring writer should experience. You will learn things by default. Show up and you will become wiser to this industry, if at least to it oligopolies. An awing ordeal.
